Dog Training and Puppy Training
Family Dog Training and Puppy Training
Dogs are very fast learners. They can quickly learn what works to help them get what they want and need. I’m sure you’ve heard the old saying “if it isn’t broke, why fix it”. Dogs are a perfect example of this in action. If they are getting what they want by doing what they’re doing, they will continue to do it. They are also very creative and if something isn’t working they will try something else. Realize that you are shaping your dog’s behavior every moment you spend with them. Dogs are a direct result of the environment they live in so pay close attention to the messages you are sending your dog whenever you interact with them.
Unless you are starting out with a new puppy, which has a clean slate so to speak, you are dealing with a product of yours or somebody else’s environment. Often times that environment exaggerates certain behaviors that become big or small problems for everyone except the dog. Many people unknowingly try to “solve” a problem behavior and in fact actually give reinforcement to it. Shaping your dog’s behaviors and priorities so that they are always well mannered and quick to respond to you, even when they are distracted is my goal, as a Los Angeles dog trainer. To achieve this requires training you as well as your dog.
My name is Duane Overturf and I started Your Best Companion as a dog and puppy training company to help people get the most out of their experience of having a dog. For more than 34 years, I’ve helped thousands of dogs and owners from virtually every background. As a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers and the International Association of Canine Professionals I continue to educate myself with new knowledge about all techniques that are being explored by other professional trainers. Techniques that get quicker results and are often times gentler as well.
Today, my trainers train their clients and their dogs using methods and tools that were unheard of when I started in the field. We’ll show you how to start your new puppy so as to avoid future potential problems from ever forming in the first place. We’ll show you how to extinguish behavioral problems permanently and how to get your dog to really want to listen to you with incredible reliability. We have extensive experience working with rehabilitating timid, neglected, abused, & rescued dogs. We have helped owners of dogs with aggressive tendencies become confident that their dog will behave responsibly. Working with us, you’ll learn how to effect permanent changes in your dog.

With so many Los Angeles dog trainers and behaviorists out there, how do you decide which is best for you and your dog? That’s a good question and it deserves an answer. There is plenty of evidence that supports using dog training techniques which focus on positive reinforcement to shape behaviors we like. This newer approach to dog training, which is often referred to as “Clicker Training”, is not really new at all. Exotic animal trainers and movie animal trainers have been using these techniques for more than 40 years to train the animals you see at places such as Sea World or in the movies. Results are achieved without coercion or forcing our will upon the animal. This type of training only began being used by family dog trainers in the early 1990′s.
Plenty of evidence also supports traditional methods of dog training and puppy training, which primarily uses timely punishment to teach compliance and stop behaviors we don’t like. These traditional methods, which are often referred to as “The Koehler Method of Dog Training” have been around for more than 50 years as well. Many dogs have achieved their AKC obedience title, schutzhund title, etc. using these methods.
In addition, there is another method of training that is becoming more and more popular. It is referred to as “Remote E-collar Training”. This method uses negative reinforcement in the form of a static electricity to teach behaviors to the animal being trained. The shock is very similar to the machine used in physical therapy to rehabilitate muscles. The levels used are generally very mild, sometimes to the point of being imperceptible to you or me. This method of training has also been around for over 50 years. Remote E-collar Training was originally used primarily by field dog trainers to communicate with dogs that were sometimes a great distance away from the trainer, until the 1990′s, when their effectiveness and versatility crossed over into other areas of dog training.
The truth is that all of these Dog and Puppy Training methodologies work because they all have merit in reference to how dogs learn. As you can see there are many ways to train a dog and virtually all of them work on most dogs. Is there one “best way” to train every dog? I don’t believe there is, because there are too many factors at play that differ from home to home. For instance, how quickly you expect to see results, the age of your dog, the history behind your dog’s behaviors, your family members and their attitude towards the dog and training, your training goals, etc. can all have an influence on which approach might be best for you and your dog. Secondly, different dogs respect different things, are interested in different things and find different things important. For these reasons, I believe a dog and puppy trainer that has at their disposal many different ways to achieve the same end result is more likely to be successful than a trainer that uses only one method of training.
Some Los Angeles Dog Trainers believe that being a leader in your dogs eyes is a key contributing factor in having a well behaved dog. However, I have been to plenty of homes where the dog looked at their owner(s) as the leader before I arrived and the family was still having major problems. On the flip side, I have seen owners whose personalities could only be described as meek or non-dominant with great relationships with their dogs. This concept of being the “alpha” in the relationship has becoming a topic of great controversy amongst professional dog trainers. I personally believe that it is much more important to understand the way dogs communicate than it is to prove to them that you are the boss. By understanding the way they communicate and learn you will be better equipped to control, direct or inhibit their behavior as you see fit.
Your dog should be having fun while they’re learning to listen and behave well, and you should be too. Working with one of our great trainers, you’ll discover the things that matter the most to your dog, the things that drive their behavior, and learn ways to train your dog that will work for both of you.
Great dog and puppy training shouldn’t take a long time to get results either. Our trainers have personally trained tens of thousands of dogs and their owners and can assure you that in as little as one lesson you can see a remarkable improvement in your dog’s behavior. Having that special dog that brings love and enjoyment into you and your family’s life is closer than you may think. So relax. Don’t put up with the problem behaviors any longer. Programs are available in North Los Angeles & south Ventura Counties including the San Fernando Valley, Simi Valley/Moorpark, Conejo Valley, Santa Clarita Valley, West Los Angeles, Beverly Hills & Bel Air.
My Guarantee
When you enroll your dog in any dog training program offered by any trainer I refer, I make a lifetime commitment to your desire that s/he becomes an enjoyable, well mannered member of your family. Within the confines of the type of course you have selected I will do whatever it takes, for as long as it takes, to achieve this and it will never cost you another cent. In order for me to accomplish this, there are some things I would like for you to do. Should you encounter problems with your dog while you are dog training or after you have completed your lessons, telephone me immediately. We will discuss the problem and I will advise you. If this does not solve the problem, we will schedule a time as soon as possible for you to meet with a trainer. If you find it necessary to put a hold on your dog and puppy training lessons for any reason, you can, and then at any time, resume the dog training lessons when you’re ready. If you decide to place your dog in another home you can transfer the remaining dog training lessons to the dog’s new owner. This is not the limit to my guarantee. If these things don’t get the job done, we will improvise. When I say that I am committed to your owning a wonderful dog I am serious. Your satisfaction is my top priority.
